A fire broke out under a PATH train in New Jersey on Monday morning, causing passengers to evacuate from the smoke-filled cars. The blaze started at 6:19 a.m. under an eastbound train at the Newport PATH Station, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Passengers were evacuated onto the platform as the train filled with smoke. Several individuals were treated for smoke inhalation.
Video footage from inside the cars showed passengers in a state of panic as they attempted to open the doors at the station. One passenger could be heard yelling, “Move, move, move!”
Flames were seen spitting out from under the cars on the track, as shown in video footage from the platform. The fire led to the suspension of the Hoboken-WTC and JSQ-33rd Street lines, causing inconvenience for commuters.
Fire officials were present at the scene, and an investigation into the cause of the blaze was underway.
