Receive earthquake alerts on your phone before they strike

I recently came across an intriguing article that I believe you will also find fascinating.

Google, utilizing its Android operating system, has transformed billions of smartphones into the most extensive earthquake detection network in history.

Your Android device can now alert you about an earthquake before the shaking begins, thanks to a built-in feature. The same can be achieved with iPhones as well.

How the System Works

Earthquakes start with rapid, subtle P-waves, which are the initial tremors that many people do not feel. However, the accelerometer in your phone, the same sensor that detects when you rotate your phone, can pick up these waves.

When a sufficient number of Android phones in the same vicinity detect the same movement, Google’s system activates and sends early warnings to individuals who are about to experience the stronger, slower S-waves that cause damage.

This provides a window of 15 to 60 seconds to take action, such as moving away from windows, taking cover under a desk, or halting any activities that could be dangerous during an earthquake.

Real-world Impact

According to a study published in Science, the Android-based earthquake detection network identified over 11,000 actual earthquakes between 2021 and 2024. This network spans 98 countries and issues approximately 18 million alerts each month.

In some instances, individuals received over a minute’s advance notice before the shaking commenced. The system only produced three false alarms out of more than 1,300 confirmed events, showcasing its reliability.

Setting up Earthquake Alerts

Even if you do not reside in a seismic zone, it is advisable to enable the earthquake alert feature in case you travel to an area where it may be needed:

  • Open Settings, navigate to Safety & emergency.
  • Ensure that Earthquake Alerts are activated.
  • Test the alert to familiarize yourself with the warning sound.

If you own a Wear OS smartwatch, it will also vibrate to alert you, even if your phone is in another room.

iPhones and Earthquake Detection

While iPhones have accelerometers, Apple has not integrated them for earthquake detection purposes yet. For iPhone users, the free app MyShake can provide alerts from official seismic networks.
