Reno casino shooter fires 80 shots, kills 3 with unknown motive

The individual who fired shots at a Reno casino on Monday discharged 80 rounds during a violent incident that resulted in three fatalities and numerous injuries, as per authorities on Tuesday. The shooter, identified as Dakota Hawver, 26, of Reno, is in critical condition after being shot by police during an altercation outside the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino, according to the Sparks Police Department.

Investigators have not found any links between Hawver and the Grand Sierra Resort or any of the victims, and the motive behind the attack remains unknown. Hawver arrived on foot at the casino’s valet area just before 7:30 a.m. and began shooting at a group of victims using a 9mm handgun and multiple magazines, officials stated.

Hawver legally purchased the firearm approximately two years ago and recently bought the ammunition. He has no prior criminal record or history of mental health issues, according to officials.

Two of the victims—Justin Aguila, 23, and Andrew Canepa, 33—were fatally shot from behind while waiting in the valet area for transportation to the airport. Both individuals were visiting from Southern California for a bachelor party with friends.

A third victim, 66-year-old Reno resident Angel Martinez, was driving his car through the parking lot away from the casino when the suspect emerged from behind another vehicle and fatally shot Martinez multiple times, police reported.

Two other victims who sustained injuries in the shooting are currently hospitalized but are expected to recover fully, according to law enforcement. The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.
