Richard Tillman, the younger brother of the late NFL hero Pat Tillman, made an appearance in a California courtroom to address concerns about his mental capacity to stand trial.

Tillman was involved in a car crash at a San Jose post office, leading to his arrest on suspicion of arson and vandalism by the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred around 3 a.m. when he crashed into a post office located in a strip mall.

Approximately 50 firefighters spent an hour and a half extinguishing the flames caused by the crash, according to NBC Bay Area.

During the court proceedings, Tillman vocalized multiple times, asserting his competency, refusal of bail, and disowning his attorney. His attorneys expressed doubt about his ability to stand trial, and no plea was entered. Bail was set at $136,000.

Tillman is scheduled to return to court in August for a competency evaluation by appointed doctors.

Kevin Tillman, brother of Pat and Richard, mentioned that Richard was livestreaming himself on social media during the crash, which led to the car catching fire. Richard informed police at the scene that he was livestreaming the event.

Richard also identified himself as Pat Tillman’s brother to officers at the scene.

Kevin Tillman issued a statement to NBC Bay Area acknowledging Richard’s arrest and expressing relief that no one was physically harmed.

“Our family is aware of Richard’s arrest. We are in contact with local authorities and providing relevant background information. Richard has been battling severe mental health issues for years, livestreaming his altered self on social media,” Kevin stated.

“Securing proper care and support for him has been challenging, if not impossible. Therefore, these events are not as surprising as they may seem. We have no further comments at this time.”
