American sprinter Sha’Carri Richardson narrowly missed the 200-meter final at the United States track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon, following a rough week that included a recent arrest for alleged domestic violence.
Last week, Richardson was arrested for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman, at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
Richardson spent more than 18 hours in a correctional facility instead of preparing for the championships. Although she withdrew from the 100-meter event, she had an automatic bid for the world championships in Tokyo next month as the defending champion, but did not qualify for the 200-meter final.
During the 200-meter sprint, Richardson finished fourth in her heat with a time of 22.56 seconds, narrowly missing out on advancing to the final. The top two finishers of each heat and the next three fastest times advance.
Richardson, who won bronze in the 200 meters at the 2023 world championships, was competing in this event for the first time this season.
In addition to the recent incident, Richardson made headlines in 2021 for testing positive for cannabis before the Tokyo Olympics, resulting in a suspension and her missing out on the 100-meter race. She later won gold as part of the 4×100 relay team in Paris.
