Sha’Carri Richardson’s partner speaks out on alleged assault incident

Olympic gold medalist Sha’Carri Richardson was taken into custody last weekend for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman.

The incident occurred at the Seattle Tacoma Airport when an officer was alerted by a Transportation Security Administration supervisor about a disturbance involving Richardson and Coleman, according to the police report.

Richardson reportedly grabbed Coleman’s backpack, pushed him into a wall, and threw headphones at him. This altercation took place just days before the United States Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Coleman chose not to press charges, expressing his desire to move past the incident. He believed Richardson’s arrest was unnecessary, emphasizing the importance of forgiveness and understanding.

Richardson, known for her success in sprinting, faced a setback in her career when she tested positive for cannabis prior to the Tokyo Olympics four years ago. This led to a suspension and her exclusion from the 100 meters and 4×100 relay team. She made a comeback at the 2023 world championships, earning a gold in the 100 and a silver in the Paris Games.

This recent incident is not the first time Richardson has been involved in controversy at an airport. In January 2023, she was removed from a flight following a dispute with a flight attendant.

Despite the challenges she has faced, Richardson remains a prominent figure in track and field, with a strong track record of success. Both Richardson and Coleman have achieved gold medals in the 4×100 meter relay at the world championships.
