The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Boston Red Sox in dramatic fashion, with a rare occurrence not seen since 1971.
During the bottom of the 10th inning with the bases loaded and no outs, Edmundo Sosa found himself in a pivotal moment at the plate in Citizens Banks Park. While attempting to swing at a pitch outside the strike zone from the Red Sox, Sosa checked his bat just in time to avoid crossing the plate for a strike call.
However, his bat made contact with the Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez’s glove, resulting in catcher’s interference.

As a result of the interference, Sosa was awarded first base, and Brandon Marsh scored the winning run for a 3-2 victory.
While the Phillies celebrated their unusual win, the Red Sox were left stunned by the unexpected outcome on the road.
This marked only the second time in the divisional era, which began in 1969, that a game ended due to catcher’s interference, according to MLB.com. The last instance was in 1971.

Philadelphia’s victory allowed them to maintain their lead in the NL East by a half-game over the New York Mets. The Mets also secured a comeback win against the Los Angeles Angels on Monday, with a final score of 7-5.
The game saw RBI singles from Nick Castellanos and J.T. Realmuto early on, but the teams remained tied until extra innings. Boston’s Jarren Duran hit a home run in the first inning, and Trevor Story’s performance helped the Red Sox tie the game.
