What is Grok, and why does it matter?
Grok is an intelligent AI chatbot developed by xAI, Elon Musk’s company. It is designed to be witty, helpful, and more conversational than typical assistants. What sets Grok apart is its personality – it is not only informative but also entertaining.
Grok 4 is the most recent version of the chatbot, offering quicker responses, sharper humor, and a better grasp of context. This upgraded model is now being introduced in Teslas, aiming to provide a more human-like experience.
WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?
Grok is not available in all Teslas
If your Tesla meets the criteria, you will already have Grok 4 installed. Simply tap your screen, start chatting, and enjoy the journey. However, your Tesla must be equipped with an AMD Ryzen processor, which is included in models manufactured since mid-2021, to support Grok. Older vehicles with Intel Atom processors are not compatible with Grok at the moment. Additionally, you must have software version 2025.26 (available from July 2025) or later.
Furthermore, a strong Wi-Fi connection or Tesla’s $9.99/month Premium Connectivity plan is required. Grok relies on cloud technology to process responses, necessitating an internet connection.
Grok’s rollout plan starts gradually
Anyone in the U.S. who received a Tesla since July 12, 2025, will already have access to Grok. The feature is currently only available in the U.S. as Tesla collects feedback. Older models like the Model S, Model 3, Model X, Model Y, or Cybertruck will require a software update to integrate Grok.

You can also check through the Tesla app by tapping the menu icon in the top right corner and inquiring about your vehicle’s specifications.

What this means for you
This introduction follows the launch of Grok 4, xAI’s newest AI model. This version of Grok has attracted attention for its bold responses. If your Tesla meets the requirements, you can start interacting with Grok today. However, it currently lacks the capability to assist with navigation, music playback, or adjusting the AC.
Kurt’s key takeaways
The inclusion of Grok in Tesla vehicles could lead to more entertaining drives with the chatty AI companion. Conversing with your car during long solo trips may help make the journey feel shorter. While Grok’s current functions are limited, there is potential for further development beyond answering questions. Once it gains access to your car controls, your vehicle will truly resemble K.I.T.T., the iconic artificially intelligent car from the 1980s TV show Knight Rider.
