A proposed gerrymandered map by the Texas GOP could result in Democratic Rep. Jasmine Crockett being removed from her own district and potentially adding more House seats to the Republican delegation in Texas.

Recently, Texas House Republicans unveiled a redistricting proposal that could lead to the addition of five new GOP seats. The initial draft map, subject to changes before final approval by the state legislative chambers, aims to redraw district boundaries to incorporate more Republican-leaning areas within traditionally Democratic strongholds like Dallas and Houston.

Crockett, who represents Texas’s 30th Congressional District covering a significant portion of Dallas, has criticized the redistricting plan as “an attempt to suppress voters’ voices.”

She claims that prior to the map’s unveiling by Republicans, she was asked to confirm her address along with other incumbent Democratic members of Congress.

The mid-decade redistricting effort may also result in Democratic lawmakers facing primary challenges against fellow incumbents as the number of seats becomes limited.

For instance, if the map is adopted, Democratic Rep. Lloyd Doggett, currently representing Texas’ 37th Congressional District in Austin, would find himself in the same district as Rep. Greg Casar from the neighboring 35th District, also situated in Austin.

Last week, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries emphasized the importance of opposing the proposed map as a critical moment for the party.

“We will oppose them politically, through government channels, in court, and by winning the support of the people of Texas and beyond,” Jeffries stated during a press briefing in Austin.

Jeffries emphasized that despite corporations and universities aligning with Trump, Texas Democrats will not yield.

Standing alongside Jeffries, Texas Democratic Rep. Lizzie Fletcher warned that redistricting efforts in Texas could serve as a model for Republican power expansion nationwide.

“People across the country are observing our actions in Texas,” Fletcher remarked.
