President Donald Trump criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Wednesday, accusing him of “extortion” for delaying Trump’s nominees in the Senate.

Trump made the statement from his Truth Social account, highlighting the unprecedented bottleneck of the president’s nominees in the Senate. Negotiations between Senate Republicans and Schumer to expedite the nomination process collapsed this week.

“Senator Schumer wants Republicans to pay two billion dollars as extortion for the approval of hundreds of Trump appointments, who have been waiting for months,” Trump wrote.

Trump emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Republicans must create legislation to combat these country-hating thugs. Move quickly!”

Lawmakers left Washington without a deal, leaving Republicans frustrated with Schumer and Senate Democrats for filibustering Trump’s nominees. Only Secretary of State Marco Rubio received a smooth confirmation.

Schumer and the Democrats demanded that Trump release billions in funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and foreign aid, leading to Trump’s claims of a $2 billion “extortion.”

Senator Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., expressed frustration with Schumer’s actions, stating that a reaction was necessary due to the situation created by Schumer.

Currently, there are over 1,200 positions requiring Senate confirmation, with over 140 nominees still pending on the Senate’s calendar.
