The Department of Homeland Security issued a statement on Tuesday highlighting some of the individuals arrested in its nationwide crackdown on criminal undocumented immigrants. According to the statement, 70% of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s arrests have been of undocumented immigrants with criminal convictions or charges. The agency is facing criticism for its enforcement of immigration laws and a significant increase in assaults against officers.
Some Democrats have accused ICE of targeting innocent immigrants. During anti-ICE riots in Los Angeles, Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., accused President Donald Trump and the administration of targeting individuals they deem “undesirable” and suggested that U.S. citizens could be next.
The DHS statement identified several undocumented immigrants with criminal charges or convictions, including offenses such as hit-and-run, aggravated assault, felony menacing, grand theft, and drug possession.
For example, Olinda Micaela Gonzalez-Ortiz, a 21-year-old from Guatemala, was arrested by ICE in Baltimore for a hit-and-run conviction. Federico Fong-Nunez, a 53-year-old Mexican immigrant arrested in Boulder, has 21 criminal convictions, including burglary and aggravated assault.
Jhon Jervis Chavez-De La Rosa, a 21-year-old from Venezuela, was arrested in Houston for assault causing bodily injury. Other individuals arrested by ICE had criminal histories that included offenses like grand theft, burglary, tampering with a vehicle, and possession of methamphetamine.
ICE has also apprehended numerous undocumented immigrants charged with or convicted of child sex offenses. In one case, ICE Homeland Security Investigations led to the sentencing of Mark Rice to 30 years in federal prison for sexually abusing a 2-year-old and producing child sex abuse material.
In the statement, DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin praised President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for empowering ICE to target dangerous individuals. Despite facing a significant increase in assaults, law enforcement officers continue to arrest violent criminals and drug traffickers to protect the American people.
