Trump suggests FBI may need to round up AWOL Texas Democrats

President Donald Trump suggested on Tuesday that the FBI might need to intervene to round up a group of Democratic lawmakers who fled Texas to avoid voting on the state’s proposed redistricting map. This move by the Democrats was an attempt to prevent Republicans from achieving a two-thirds quorum required to pass the redistricting map, which could potentially benefit the GOP in future elections.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott, along with other Texas officials, has called for the return of the 50 Democratic members of the state legislature who fled. Failure to return could result in consequences such as removal from office under the Texas Constitution. After missing the deadline set by Abbott, warrants for the arrest of the absent Democrat lawmakers were approved by the Texas House.

National Democrats have supported the actions of the Texas Democrats, with Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker commending them for their courage. However, President Trump criticized the Democrats for leaving the state instead of engaging in the legislative process.

The President suggested that the FBI might have to get involved to locate and bring back the Texas Democrats. He emphasized the importance of elected officials fulfilling their duties and participating in the democratic process. Trump also praised Texas’ redistricting plans, stating that there is strong support for them.

Overall, the situation in Texas highlights the ongoing political tensions surrounding redistricting and the lengths to which some lawmakers are willing to go in order to influence electoral outcomes.
