A member of the city council in Virginia was taken to a burn center after a man poured gasoline on him and set him on fire at his workplace on Wednesday.

The incident occurred while Danville City Council member Lee Vogler was working at the office, according to Andrew Brooks, publisher and owner of Showcase Magazine. Brooks shared on social media that a person entered the building around 11 a.m. local time, carrying a five-gallon bucket of gasoline.

The individual, who has not been named yet, poured the gasoline on Vogler as he attempted to flee to the front of the building.

According to Brooks, the man then set Vogler on fire as he followed him. Vogler was able to identify the suspect during the attack, who is now in police custody.

Vogler suffered serious burn injuries and was transported to the Lynchburg burn center for treatment. His current condition remains unknown.

“We are deeply shocked and saddened by this violent act,” stated Showcase Magazine. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Lee and his family as he receives medical care. The Showcase Magazine team is fully cooperating with law enforcement in their ongoing investigation.”

Vogler was elected to Danville City Council in May 2012, making him the youngest person to hold the position at age 24, as per the city’s website. He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010 and currently works as the sales director at Showcase Magazine.
