Justice has been served to at least one person who threw a sex toy onto the court during a WNBA game.
The WNBA announced on Saturday that the individual who tossed a neon green dildo onto the court during a game between the Atlanta Dream and Golden State Valkyries on July 29 has been taken into custody. The league issued a warning that any other individuals caught throwing objects onto the court will be removed from the arena and could face a ban of at least one year.
“The safety and well-being of everyone in our arenas is a top priority for our league. Objects of any kind thrown onto the court or in the seating area can pose a safety risk for players, game officials, and fans,” the league stated. “In line with WNBA Arena Security Standards, any fan who intentionally throws an object onto the court will be immediately ejected and face a minimum one-year ban in addition to being subject to arrest and prosecution by local authorities.”
The incident took place late in the fourth quarter during a game at the Gateway Center Arena. Play was briefly halted while an official removed the object from the court, and it was then taken away by a police officer.
On a later occasion, a similar incident occurred when another fan threw a sex toy under the basket during a game between the Valkyries and the Chicago Sky.
“It’s super disrespectful. I don’t really get the point of it,” Sky center Elizabeth Williams commented after the game. “It’s really immature. Whoever is doing it needs to grow up.”
Several WNBA players also shared their thoughts on social media, including the Indiana Fever’s Sophie Cunningham and New York Liberty forward Isabelle Harrison.
Cunningham expressed her frustration, stating: “Stop throwing dildos on the court… you’re going to hurt one of us.”
Harrison also voiced her concerns on social media, urging better arena security and emphasizing the dangerous consequences of throwing objects onto the court.
