Yankees pay tribute to fallen NYPD officer with moment of silence

The New York Yankees paid tribute to NYPD Officer Didarul Islam with a moment of silence before their game against the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday.

The Yankees shared on X, “Before tonight’s game, we held a moment of silence in memoriam of NYPD Police Officer Didarul Islam, who was tragically killed in the midtown shooting yesterday.”

A tragic mass shooting at an office building in midtown Manhattan resulted in the loss of five lives, including Officer Didarul Islam, who was killed by the gunman before he took his own life.

The high-rise office tower where the shooting occurred is located near Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and flags at government buildings were lowered to half-staff in honor of Officer Islam.

The Yankees organization extended their condolences to Officer Islam’s family and the families of the other victims, denouncing the senseless act of violence.

The Yankees were trailing the Rays 3-0 in the third inning of the game on Tuesday night.

The building where the shooting took place also houses the NFL’s headquarters.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell expressed gratitude for Officer Islam’s sacrifice and praised law enforcement’s swift response to the threat.

Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old father of two with a third child on the way, had been serving on the force for four years and was stationed in the Bronx’s 47th Precinct.

The NYPD described Officer Islam as a exemplar of the department, highlighting his dedication to protecting New Yorkers until his life was tragically cut short.

During this time of sorrow, the NYPD and the community will honor Officer Islam’s legacy and remember his ultimate sacrifice.
