The Los Angeles Angels played without one of their key hitters on Tuesday night as Yoan Moncada was on MLB’s restricted list to take his U.S. Citizenship test.
Moncada, originally from Cuba, signed with the Boston Red Sox as an international free agent and quickly rose to become one of baseball’s top prospects. He made his MLB debut at the age of 21.
After a trade to the Chicago White Sox in 2016, Moncada’s performance has had its ups and downs. Despite leading the MLB in strikeouts in 2018, he showed improvement in 2019 with a batting average of .315 and an OPS of .915.
Throughout his career, Moncada has maintained a batting average of .252 and an OPS of .756. This season, he is hitting .221 with a .436 slugging percentage.
It remains uncertain if Moncada will be available for the Angels’ upcoming games, but he is expected to play against the Detroit Tigers this weekend.
