During the Voters of Tomorrow Summit in Washington, D.C., young political activists expressed their belief that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and New York City Democratic mayoral nominee, Zohran Mamdani, represent the future of the Democratic Party. Attendees at the summit praised these democratic socialist figures but also highlighted an issue where they hope to see a stronger and clearer stance.
The “Fighting for Our Future” event on Friday, July 25, brought together over 200 youth organizers, leaders, and progressive politicians, including Rep. Ro Khanna of California and former DNC vice chair David Hogg. As the progressive wing of the party seeks new leadership, one attendee called on Ocasio-Cortez to speak out more on the situation in Gaza.
“I admire AOC,” said Reihena Djema, an attendee from Ohio. “I would like to see her take a firmer and more vocal stand on Palestine. Nevertheless, I believe she should lead the Democratic Party as a Democratic socialist.”
Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani recently collaborated on a closed-door skill-sharing event with congressional Democrats in Washington, D.C., focusing on running successful digital campaigns. While not present at the summit, their policies were a topic of discussion among attendees.
“I think more politicians should embrace socialism,” Djema remarked. “It is crucial to be aware of class differences and move away from the neoliberal notion that it is acceptable to engage in capitalism and exploit workers. I believe the Democratic Party should prioritize workers’ rights and lean towards socialism.”
Mamdani has faced criticism from conservatives and moderates for past anti-capitalist statements, including a previous suggestion to seize the means of production.
Ocasio-Cortez, on the other hand, has been scrutinized by her progressive base, such as the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), for voting against a proposed amendment to reduce funding for Israel’s defense systems. She clarified her position by emphasizing her focus on cutting off the supply of US munitions contributing to the conflict in Gaza.
Despite her efforts, Ocasio-Cortez’s campaign office was later vandalized with red paint, accusing her of supporting genocide in Gaza.
“I believe she should speak out more on the Gaza situation, specifically condemning Israel for their actions, while still acknowledging that she is doing great work,” Djema commented.
Zainab Chowdry, a student at the University of Texas, expressed her admiration for leaders like Mamdani and Ocasio-Cortez, noting that their rising prominence in politics is empowering for young people.
“Candidates like Zohran Mamdani and AOC are truly inspiring. Seeing someone like Mamdani, a fellow Muslim, gaining recognition in the political arena is highly motivating,” remarked Ayan Molodina, a high school student from Texas.
Deon Tran, a young voter from California, acknowledged that some of these progressive policies may seem unconventional but stressed the importance of having leaders who are willing to take risks and challenge traditional norms.
Young voters are drawn to candidates like Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani because of their support for innovative solutions like the Green New Deal and their focus on addressing the cost of living.
Ashi, a representative from California at the Voters of Tomorrow Summit, highlighted the appeal of fresh thinkers like Ocasio-Cortez and Mamdani among young voters seeking leaders who can advocate for their interests.
Fox News Digital reached out to Ocasio-Cortez’s office for comment on the calls for her to do more regarding Gaza.
